| Who has not dreamed of having a horse who would perform cool tricks upon command? Having a horse who seems to "understand you", shaking their head yes or no, counting out their age, or picking up an item and handing it to you upon request? Aside from the sheer "cool" factor, there are some very practical reasons for training your horse to perform unusual requests. Trick training is a great relationship building tool. Not only does it foster a high degree of trust, it will also make you more observant of the small nuances of behavior of your equine partner, and will help fine-tune the unique language the two of you already share. It can also be a life saver~ literally. A horse that has been trick trained is a horse that has learned to do the equine equivelent of "applying knowlege", and years down the road when you have that hair raising experience.....leg caught in fencing, or a foot wedged in a tree root for example, your horse has a better chance of escaping without serious injury, because he's learned to figure out how to look for the answer. There is much potential for financial rewards as well. A sorrel trail gelding is just one of many.......unless he also takes a bow, will do a rear on command, or will lie down for his rider to mount. Suddenly he's not "just another red horse", suddenly he's quite special and will stand out in any crowd. |
